Jay Monton Jira Bashes Thai Lakorns “It’s lower standard”

Actor “Jay” Monton Jira returns to acting to star in a new movie scheduled to commence filming end of this year. The former lakorn actor says he won’t be accepting any work in lakorns because he’s fed up with the lack of development in the Thai lakorn industry.

What have you been up to lately?

I have regular work in music. Right now I have my own record label called Samutprakarn Sound and I do radio shows and I write songs and produce music for artists and I also make music for commercials. End of this year I’ll also be staring in a romantic comedy for M39. Right now I haven’t even read the script yet but I don’t need a refresher course in acting, they are writing the script so I can be myself as much as possible in the film”

Do you have any lakorns coming up?

“I don’t think I’ll be acting in lakorns anymore. It’s over now, I’m having fun with music because I get to do my own thing and I have the right to do whatever I like. But with lakorns, there’s a director, there’s other casts and there’s cameras, costumes and a lot of other things. I don’t want to do it unless I get to choose everything myself, if I can’t do that then I’d rather not do it at all. At least with movies there’s no set rules and you don’t have to do this and that. Lakorn is like something that I’ve totally lost interest in, but I don’t know, with movies we can talk about it”

“I don’t know why but I’ve always felt this way about lakorns. After I came back from overseas to work in Thai lakorns I felt it. It’s been like 3-4 years and things should really improve by now but everything is still the same. Maybe I’m not satisfied with the work and the reason why I had to go and work overseas is because I wanted a higher experience and now that I’m back I end up seeing something that’s lower standard and I feel it’s a waste of time. So I don’t want anything to do with it”

  3. I agree with him but he could at least put it in a better way. It was kinda mean the way he said it. I have only seen him in one lakorn and it was a sucky one. How many lakorn have he played in?

  4. He has been in a few back in the days with Ramona. His brother used to be in lakorns also. I feel that he is right though. This article should refer back to Cheer’s article on how she doesn’t get roles.

It does seem undeveloped and where acting doesn’t matter with abilities. That’s why Thai lakorns are under-rated.

  5. too bad his Popstar movie ended up nowhere
hope his new movie will be a good one and be seen to the public

    i think he’s right
    that’s why i don’t watch much lakorn
    they are all the same…

  6. LMAO another good laugh. I have to agree with the guy but somehow I am so addicted to Thai lakorns. Not all lakorn are of poor quality. Well most are, so he is quite right about the low standard.

  7. Wow. So he’s literally just bashing the entire lakorn business, and all of whom he had worked with in lakorns?

I don’t know who he is (so I therefore I don’t give sh-t about him), but he sounds like he thinks he’s all high and mighty. What the hell makes him so special? Low standards? He needs to be casted in a Chinese drama then. By then, he’ll be begging to be in a lakorn.

“with lakorns, there’s a director, there’s other casts and there’s cameras, costumes and a lot of other things.”

The same can be said about movies. The only difference is, movies are shorter and less time consuming. From this statement, it sounds like he doesn’t like directors, doesn’t like being surrounded by numerous cast members, does not like cameras, and doesn’t like costumes? Doesn’t make sense. Maybe he had been casted in too many “low standard” dramas only… that would explain his bitterness.

    • What does it have to do with Chinese dramas?

      Comment by WPBlogger | July 14, 2009 | Reply

      • Nothing na kaa. I’m just using that as an example. No harm/offense meant either.

        Comment by tofu | July 14, 2009 | Reply

        • I don’t know. It just seems like you were saying Chinese dramas are stupid and boring or something so thats why you said he should go act in Chinese dramas lol

          • i think tofu meant that maybe they are under budget also?

lakorns are the same. i’ve been watching lakorns for so long and all these remakes of lakorn doesn’t seem to make it better.

thai movies on the other hand are stepping up to their game. art of the devil 2 was freakin awesome! it was gruesome but awesome!

  8. What the fuck, who do he think he is “Ken”, just because he dont get lead role and nobody want him, he should not have said that and if he dont like it then get out of the entertaining business even music, he cant even sing. I bet after he fail with singing he will come out and said bad things about music industry like the stage is really small, the mic doesnt work, the cloth are weird and the fans are into look then talent(well this one is true). So kind of agree with tofu

    • That’s basically what cheer is somewhat saying. Except she use “Sexiness”. Here he’s saying HE doesn’t want to do lakorns cus it’s so low standard. Cheer is saying she isn’t getting work cus she’s not sexy enough. So they are basically dissing the industry by saying there’s no talent.

I just like how he said he doesn’t want to do it unless he get to choose everything himself. Oh my god like seriously? Even the big name hollywood people don’t get to choose everything themselves unless they direct/co-direct/ or produced it. Also why didn’t he stay and work overseas if everything in thailand is so low standard? Why? Cus he’s just a no name d-lister that’s why.

      Comment by c-indy | July 14, 2009 | Reply

      • Thats not true, you have to admitt, thai actors need to be somewhat cute or pretty or sexy to be in the industry, and cheer is not those kind, she’s kind of a tom boy looking. And I agree that the industry dont want talent they want look. And what are you saying when you said he get to choose everthing himself, the role or what and he’s suck thats why he’s not in the lakorn

        Comment by preaw | July 16, 2009 | Reply

  9. Gosh He sounds like a highly snob to demand so much but he does seem to have valid needs. He isn’t the Tom Hanks or Brad Pitt of Thailand so atleast give a little bit of credit to lakorns. If celebrities are unsatisfied with lakorn they should find more things outside to fall back on. I’m sure he will do movies because more money will be involved. As for him interacting with cast and directors and makeup and sets? Umm.. Hello like Tofu said it’s about the same thing. Well anywho, good for him that he’s not in lakorn because he doesn’t seem to be Pra eak material to me.

  10. I remember him and his brother in the 90s. I like that he’s straight forward and not sugar coating how he really feels. What he said is true about Thai lakorns because they are all the same. Just because he’s saying this doesn’t mean he doesn’t appreciated he’s time back then.

    Comment by yello | July 14, 2009 | Reply

    • He did said he doesnt aprreciated back then and now and it’s true that most of the lakorns is the same but this go for korean, chinese, japan and even american moive

  11. he’s got a point… if you think about it. but i like lakorns by exact because they always have something new and different for the viewers! i’m never disappointed with exact!

  12. I’ve always personally preferred Thai movies to lakorns. I think in the past 8 years or so Thai movies have really stepped up their game whereas lakorns are pretty much the same recycled stoylines, you get the few that stand out but the majority are the same.

    Comment by ish | July 14, 2009 | Reply

  13. you can tell he’s more upset. he wasnt famous and his lakorns were not a hit. i bet if he was famous like how ken is right now, he’d still be accepting lakorn offers. lol. kynda reminds of what taya rogers had to say about the thai entertainment, when she ‘thought’ she was guna go hollywood. lol. then after she said that hollywood said she did not have the korean or taiwanese look, instead of blaming herself for the lack of something called TALENT she went back to lakorn#2. i myself see that theres not much progress in the lakorn world, same o same o… but for these people to put the thai entertainment down, what about the rest of the celebrities and crews in the business? are they less professional and talentless? cmon, seriously jay. whats ur talent? lol.

  14. someone mentioned Ken above – I assume that lakorn happened to be in a good quality and good to watch ( I did not watch it so no comment) – but if in 100 lakorns and only 1 is good, then yes, it has not improved at all.

I only watched some when I was in Thailand..but I couldn’t watch over 15 min because the acting skills are horrible, the stunts they were trying to use were horrible – fightings were like fooling around (unlike the fights you see in a good movie).

so yeah, if Jay thinks lakorn has only limited room and has not improved at all – it’s his freedom to try on movies – and what he said is true from my point of view (no offense to those who loves Thai lakorns)

personally I think he produces interesting music
it’s not like the “same old” pop music you hear everyday now

    he’s got something
but he’s only got limited space in the Thai e-biz industry
like what he said about Thai lakorns – too bad, many ppl cannot accept it
hey…no one likes to accept the fact they are not good enough

I’m pretty sure Jay could try to do more lakorns
but like I said…if only 1 good out of 100…why bother doing so
If other ppl want to take the job, go ahead.
Best of luck and let’s hope Thai lakorns will improve in the future
(that’s probably why Jay was thinking)
    lol

just some of my thoughts here
    no harm no fights please

    cheers

    • He could try to do more lakorns but does anyone actually really want him? There’s a difference.

      Comment by c-indy | July 15, 2009 | Reply

      • Because they only care about looks and Jay doesn’t fit their standard. It’s actually sad because in general, it doesn’t matter how good of an actor/actress you are, you won’t go far unless you got the looks.

I rather watch a movie with an okay looking actor who can actually act then a beautiful actor who has no clue.

        Comment by allie | July 15, 2009 | Reply

        • Agree that they only care for look but you have to admitt Jay suck at acting and his thai is not that good, and he’s ugly.

Those that were comparing lakorn with Korean, Chinese, American etc dramas must be joking right.

  17. i’ve been wanting to comment about thai lakorns being basically the same. i find thai lakorns being fresh and interesting at first but after a few lakorns, the stories are basically the same. it’s always about romance and who is end up with whom obviously. the worst part is about the fighting/slapping among women and lower staff. please don’t show such a negative abuse and encourage more lakorns about educational, career, middle class family, and solving crime instead of upper/lower class and rich/poor. however, i still find some good lakorns but they still need to be improved with their stories.

    Comment by peonies99 | July 16, 2009 | Reply

  18. I agree with his viewpoints, but I have a big problem with his attitude; talk about ego! Instead of merely bashing the lakorn industry, he should go back and try to improve it. Why bother going overseas to achieve “higher experience” when you’re going to come back and look down on your roots? If he continues to talk this way, it’d be better for him just to stay overseas.

  19. Every country’s e-biz have directors, other casts and costumes. I don’t get what he’s getting at. He rather be the ONLY cast member? If he fells so strongly, he should come up with one so we can see what his vision of a high quality lakorn is like.

“Right now I haven’t even read the script yet but I don’t need a refresher course in acting, they are writing the script so I can be myself as much as possible in the film” <—That's not acting if you're just being yourself. How is that high standards?? He needs an attitude adjustment.

  20. the man is right although I watch thai lakorns and i find some to be entertaining, it’s predictable, it follows the same theme, sometimes I find myself skipping str8 to the ending with some lakorns. And there are always fuck ups and loop holes in lakorn, like the director is careless and don’t think it matters or ppl will notice.Nang Thai always has a jealous bitch that’s willing to kill or hurt someone for money or for a man or woman what’s up with that shit. It’s a reflection of their culture too that’s really how most Thai women I know are, insecure and jealous.

  21. i mean although I find it to be entertaining and I didn’t really mean that’s how Thai women really are, but it seems that’s how they are, look at their celebrities.and i know a few in real life that are like that.
